My Week With Marilyn

The DVD just came out so I got it. I saw the movie when it was in theaters but fell asleep so I figured I would watch it again.

There was an argument on Echee's Blog that the Emma Watson character was irrelevant and boring. I still disagree with this. The Lucy character was important but the director and screen writer didn't see this and did not develop the character enough.

One of the most important lines in the movie was at the end, after Marilyn had gone back to the states. Colin is interested in Lucy again now that Marilyn is gone. Lucy asks Colin if Marilyn broke his heart. He says "yes". Lucy says "You deserved to have your heart broken". She said this because he broke her heart as well.

The Lucy character seemed superfluous only because the director didn't see her importance to the film. There needed to be a contrast to the fantasy world Colin was briefly in with Marilyn. Lucy was the nice girl in the real world that Colin could have a future with. He lost that by the choices he made.

Also, Emma did fine with the little she had to work with. It is not a good role though. It could have been, but it wasn't. It did seem superfluous because there was not enough time to develop any chemistry or emotion between Colin and Lucy. This was not Emma's fault. This was the director and screen writer's fault.
